Yesterday I didn't check out the link to Amazon in thehdroom.com's article, so I didn't realize until a friend pointed it out to me a short while ago that the new Amazon listing for the Blu-ray/DVD combo release (as opposed to this old one for the Blu-ray: Dark Shadows [Blu-ray] (2012)) lists it as having two discs. In all likelihood one is the Blu-ray disc and the other is the DVD disc. But as I've mentioned before, one may never really know until one opens the packaging for oneself.

Also, on the off chance that Amazon (or some other site) doesn't eventually list the extras for the individual releases and it turns out that there could also be a Blu-ray only release, be very careful of buying it sight unseen or even if you see it in a store because there was a big brouhaha with Warner Brother's Blu-ray only release of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Stickers on that release indicated that it contained a Maximum Movie Mode feature hosted by Robert Downey Jr., whereas no such feature is on that version of the Blu-ray - it only appears on the Blu-ray/DVD Combo release. So, who knows if a Blu-ray only release of DS may be similarly lacking when it comes to some of the Blu-ray/DVD Combo's extras?  [ghost_rolleyes]

This site has the back cover of the DVD and the back cover of the Blu-ray Box I think. The page loads slowly at least on my computer so I just click the refresh button as soon as I get to the site. http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/dark-shadows3.html

Thanks so much for the link, jimbo.  [ghost_smiley]

Well, if that article and the back cover shots of the DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo releases are correct, it definitely looks like the only extra on the DVD is "The Collinses: Every Family Has Its Demons" featurette and all the other extras only appear on the Blu-ray/DVD Combo release. If that is the case, in plain English I think it's shitty. But there's not much we can do because situations like that seem to be the norm rather than the exception lately.  [ghost_sad]

I have messages in to MPI, Big Finish & Dynamite Comics.
Awaiting statements RE: their sales figures. We'll see if DS is ''a 50 year old soap no one cares about''.

Since it seems like no Web sites have taken it upon themselves to update us on the foreign box office, I decided to check out the foreign charts on Box Office Mojo and to tally up what's been reported since July 8th, which is the last time we got an official foreign tally (though one thing that's interesting is that a lot of European and Asian countries haven't been reported by BOM since the middle of June, so that's why they're missing from the list):

So, given that last we officially heard the foreign gross was $156,800,000, at the very least the foreign gross has to be $161,358,837, especially when the foreign numbers through July 29th have yet to be reported. And as of this past weekend DS' worldwide gross must have been at the very least $240,709,366. Though even beyond the foreign numbers through July 29th, it has to be more because of all the countries that haven't been reported on BOM.

DS made $40,000 yesterday, far more than Battleship, Rock of Ages, or Prometheus.

DS just might make 80 milliion domestically, something I thought would be nearly impossible a month ago.

Yesterday I meant to post the daily rankings for weekend - but I suppose better a few days late than never.  [ghost_wink]

So with that in mind: on Friday DS seems to have ranked 18th, and on both Saturday and Sunday it seems to have ranked 19th.

July 27th Box Office

July 28th Box Office

July 29th Box Office

And as David already reported, DS came in 21st for the overall weekend.

July 27-29, 2012 Box Office

And those rankings seem quite high for a film in its 12th weekend, so, of course, that prompted me to check/compare DS to this year's other films in their 12th weekend:

FilmGrossPer Screen
=====================================
The Hunger Games
$1,072,213
$1,428
Marvel's The Avengers
$620,411
$1,253
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
$512,212
$1,277
Dr. Seuss' The Lorax
$458,595
$1,210
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
$416,791
$1,447
21 Jump Street
$376,391
$1,141
DARK SHADOWS
$287,229
$1,294
John Carter
$247,940
$1,417
To the Arctic (IMAX)
$244,152
$4,695
Mirror Mirror
$235,632
$848

DS is still holding up quite well from last weekend, particularly when one considers that films like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and To The Arctic started out or have remained in limited release. And even though DS' per screen slipped considerably from last weekend's figure, with the exception of last weekend we'd have to go all the way back to its 3rd weekend (when it was playing in 3,404 theaters with a per screen of $2,205) to find a per screen higher than this past weekend's figure.

And finally, comparing DS to what Wrath of the Titans did in its 12th weekend, well, that comparison is still pretty dismal because that film grossed $77,466 - $209,773 less than what DS grossed.

And we can add MIB 3 to the list of films that DS is doing much better than these days.

I got great statements from Big Finish and Dynamite Comics for my Fangoria piece in defense of DS--Big Finish said that DS audio CD sales were increasing!

So, DS is back to being tracked daily, I guess.  Yesterday's numbers are in- DS made $44,102, up 10% from Mon.  Domestic total is now $79,434,897.  It seems to be in 20th place at the moment but as always, something else could sneak in ahead of it.  Box office mojo for Tues.:

http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?view=1day&sortdate=2012-07-31&p=.htm

I think it may be possible for it to hit $80M but it'll really have to keep chugging away, and even then it could take a few more weeks, risking losing theaters with each new week.

I lost track of how MIB3 was doing, and it doesn't seem to be on BOM's list from yesterday, but I'll take your word for it, David-Elijah  [ghost_smiley]  But at the moment DS is doing better than Battleship (of course), Prometheus, and Abraham Lincoln.  I don't see Avengers on the Tues. list (or actually the number hasn't been updated since the 29th) so I guess they stopped doing daily tracking on that one, too.

Thanks madscntst for the update. I think it will reach the 80 million dollar mark.

Hmmm...  So it looks like the deleted scenes will only be on the BR, and that the BR will only be offered with the DVD.  Who would have thought better of the same division that passed up the NoDS restoration?  Guess I'll have to wait awhile before seeing these deleted scenes.   [ghost_rolleyes]

It doesn't actually sound like the deleted scenes will be cut into the film, but just included seperately?  That's too bad...

Interesting article on tentpoles. A brief DS reference.

Very interesting - particularly how the writer says that DS was "bailed out by ever-loyal audiences overseas." It's certainly no secret that DS has been doing well overseas, but if the film really has been "bailed out" by its foreign gross so far, then that is good news to hear. And writers should stop referring to the film as a "flop" or a "bomb" or a "dud." Though, of course, we know they won't.  [ghost_rolleyes]

It's also interesting how the article brings up that "corporate bean counters are ever more secretive" when it comes to the numbers. Makes one wonder if that's the reason why three weeks ago Warner Brothers stopped reporting the foreign tally for DS? It also makes one wonder if we'll ever see an updated foreign tally once DS ends its run in overseas theaters? Or will we have to rely on the bits and pieces that Box Office Mojo will continue to report until they no longer can?  [ghost_undecided]

But at any rate, thanks so much for the link, jimbo.  [ghost_smiley]
